Tip Tuesday – Keep Brown Sugar Soft

Brown Sugar WM

Welcome to Tip Tuesday!  Where I plan on sharing a new tip with you each week.  Something that will save a little time and generally is done on the cheap!

Keep Brown Sugar Soft

I do a lot of baking in my house but that doesn’t mean I don’t struggle with hard brown sugar like everyone else.  It’s a constant battle for most of us to keep it soft and fluffy.  The second problem in my house is that no one wants to eat the heels from the loaf of bread.

So combine the two and both problems are solved.  I just toss the heels from the loaf of bread in my brown sugar container and my brown sugar stays soft as can be, plus the heels get used.  It’s a win-win situation.

You could purchase one of these brown sugar bears or heat your brown sugar in the microwave to keep it soft but by using the heels from the loaf of bread I feel like I am not wasting anything.

How do you keep your brown sugar soft?

  • I have some sort of disc in a container that seems to do the trick. There’s nothing more annoying than having to deal with those dried rocks of brown sugar, is there?!!!

I keep it in the freezer. My husband uses it a lot in the summer when he BBQ’s so I tend to pick it up when on sale and throw it in the freezer. As a bonus, I still have some when it comes time for Christmas cookies 🙂

This is great for what we keep in the cupboard.

      Mary-
I love the idea of keeping it in the freezer. Mine just tends to take up room on my shelves until it’s ready to use and then a few days soaked with bread to soften it back up. Thanks for the idea!
