Homemade Fresh Salsa Recipe

Homemade Fresh Salsa Is Pretty Easy

Salsa and chips is one of those snacks that’s fantastic for any occasion.  Pretty easy to open a jar, pour out the tomato-y goodness, and pair it with your favorite tortilla chips. On a recent trip to a farmers market, I talked with farmers about how to make Homemade Fresh Salsa. I love to make things fresh, especially when the ingredients are in season, to bring a new flavor to my table.  It doesn’t take much to make a flavorful Fresh Salsa that will go with just about any dinner, whether as a great appetizer or snack.  A quick trip to the garden or maybe the farmers market is all you need.

Fresh Ingredients for This Homemade Fresh Salsa Recipe

The ingredients are pretty simple for delicious Fresh Salsa.  You can make it is spicy or mild as you want simply by changing the peppers that you use.  I like my salsa mild, but with a little bit of bite, so I use just a single jalapeno to provide warmth without providing a burn to your tongue.  Fresh tomatoes make the basis of a good Homemade Fresh Salsa.  Choose tomatoes that are bright and ripe. Heirloom tomatoes are a good choice for their flavor, but ask at the farmers market what tomatoes they suggest.  They will let you know what’s best.  To round out the flavor of a good salsa, I add a ripe sweet pepper and a couple of onions.  This gives great flavor and body without adding more heat.  The fresher the ingredients, the better your Fresh Salsa will be.

Fresh Salsa Ingredients

3-4 medium sized tomatoes, cored and quartered

1 jalapeno, seeded and chopped

3 small onions, peeled and chopped

1 red pepper, seeded and chopped

Place all ingredients in a blender or food processor.

Pulse until desired consistency.

Pour into a bowl, cover, and chill.

Serve with tortilla chips or veggies.

Chips for Your Homemade Fresh Salsa Recipe

There are a lot of different tortilla chips on the market that would go great with your Fresh Salsa.  I love blue corn chips because of the fantastic flavor they provide and the color contrast that really grabs your eye.  You can make your own tortilla chips by slicing up a tortilla and frying them in a bit of oil or by simply baking in the oven on a cookie sheet until crisp and browned.  Fresh Salsa is also fantastic with cucumber chips, celery sticks, and zucchini crisps.  Any way you like it Fresh Salsa makes a delightful snack.

Just used your recipe as a base recipe for my own. I don’t do hot so I skipped the jalapeno pepper but I added a green pepper, used 2 red peppers, 2 sweet peppers, 1 big sweet onion instead of 3 small onions, a tomato I picked up while at the farmer’s market, a hand full of the small tomatoes growing in my back yard (no idea what kind they are 😛 ) and about 5 Roma tomatoes with just a touch of cilantro. I ended up cutting it all by hand because the food processor I had picked up at our local thrift didn’t have a blade (no idea how I missed that). Took it to church to share because there was so much and had multiple people going back for more! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

    Oh that looks fantastic!

I love this! We buy “fresh” salsa in the store to mix with avocado for a dip, but if I could make the salsa at home too, that would be even better.

      Nikki-
I love how easy fresh salsa is to make and it’s easy to customize as well. Love it hot? Add some more red pepper flakes or jalapenos. Can’t stand big junks? Pulse it in the food processor for a few times till you get a consistently that makes the family happy. Thank you so much for stopping by!

      Ellen-
I agree way better than store bought and I like how easy it is to customize to our families needs. I can quickly kick the heat up a notch for Cory and I while keeping the boys servings a bit more tame.
