6 Food Staples That Can Be Made At Home

food staples

Most women love being able to doing things from scratch. However, in this age and time, we get most of our food and fridge staples from the store pre-made. These include everything from condensed milk to mayonnaise. While store bought varieties save you time and effort and are sure to taste good, making these items from scratch not only ensures that they are wholesome and healthy but also gives a lovely homely taste to your next meal.

Check out these 6 homemade food staples that can be made at home with ease.  Why use store bought when you can make your own for a fraction of the cost and you know exactly what your getting.

Sweetened Condensed Milk

Do you love condensed milk, then you can stop adding it to your shopping list as it is quite simple to make. Just blend together a cup of boiling water, 2 cups of white sugar, ¼ of a cup of margarine and about 4 cups of non-fat, dry milk powder. You can adjust the consistency by adding or reducing the amount of water.  Check out this post on making your own sweetened condensed milk for more in depth directions.

Hot Sauce

For instance, if you love hot sauce with your meal, you can now make your own.  All it takes is a cup of carrots, a half cup of onions and 5 gloves of garlic, sautéed, and blended with 6 whole habanero chillies and a half cup of white vinegar.

Cream Of Anything Soup

If you like creamy soups and depend on the supermarket for this comfort food, you can now make your own, with 2 cups of non fat dry milk powder, 2 table spoons of corn starch, a teaspoon each of onion and garlic powder and salt to taste. Mix and use about 3 tablespoons of it for 2/3 cup of water and add chicken or mushroom or whatever you would like.

DIY Coffee Creamer

Your DIY Coffee Creamer is ready if you just shake together 14 oz of condensed milk with 1 ¾ cup of milk/cream of your choice. You can experiment with flavors and have a blast!  Check out this post on making your own coffee creamer  for more in depth directions and flavors.

Make Your Own Taco Spice Mix

Are you a fan of tacos but hate buying packaged taco spice mix? Well, the DIY version is easy to make and tastes fantastic! You will need about a tablespoon of chilli powder, ¼ teaspoon each of garlic and onion powder, red chilli flakes and powdered oregano, half a teaspoon of paprika, 1 ½ teaspoon of dried cumin and a teaspoon each of black pepper and salt. Shake well!  Check out this post on making your own taco spice mix  for more in depth directions.

Homemade Mayo

How about some homemade mayo? All you need are 3 egg yolks, a teaspoon each of vinegar and fresh lemon juice and about 2 ½ cups of vegetable oil. Add all the first three ingredients in a food processor and blend well. Now drizzle the oil as the processor is running until you get mayo!

In this modern age of pre-packaged foods I see more of my friends going back to the basics and with the 6 recipes above you will be well on your way to always having the basics on hand.

What is your favorite recipe to make from scratch?  Do you have any experience with any of the above recipes?
