How to Garden on a Budget
Attend a plant swap. You can bring plants to share with other people who attend the swap. In exchange, you will get new plants of your own and it is all free.
Create a plan for your garden on paper first. This works pretty much like a shopping list you take to the store with you when you do groceries. Having a plan for your garden on paper will assist you to overbuying purchases on a whim. In your plan, create a place for the flowers, vegetables, and decorations you may want in your garden. This will be the perfect guide so that you purchase the right amount of things you need for your garden and nothing more.
Make your own garden decorations to save money. Instead of purchasing costly decorations, you can easily make your own by recycling and reusing household items to make stunning garden decorations. You can be creative and get the kids involved. They can make fun little creatures for the garden with the toys they already have.
Composting is so much more financially smart than to buy fertilizer. Used coffee grounds make excellent compost. Other great ideas for compost include fruit and vegetable scraps, dead leaves and grass clippings.
One of the best ways to plant the garden of your dreams on a budget is to forgo the chemicals and grow everything organically. While it is true that the chemicals will help to ensure that bugs and weeds stay out of your garden, those same chemicals also end up in your family’s stomach and the local ecosystem as well. By keeping your garden free of chemicals, you are not only saving money but you are helping your family and the environment as well.
In order to create the garden of your dreams on a budget, there are some tools you will need first. Here are some to get you started:
- Shovel
- Spade
- Hoe
- Water Hose
- Rake
- Pruners
- Garden cart
- Digging fork
After you have acquired your tools you will be well on your way to seeing how easy it is to garden on a budget. By gardening on a budget you will also be providing for your family on a budget during the summer. Invest in a dehydrator and you will be able to preserve the surplus of your garden to enjoy all winter.
Gardening is an activity that the whole family can get involved in which means some great quality time spent together. Check out Garden Projects For Kids for activities to get them involved and keep them entertained as well while you work.

10 years agoWhat great tips. I always get on my FIL to create a plan first because I am such a control-freak and go crazy not having one… but the truth is that having one would save us a lot of time and money. Thanks for your post.
