7 Educational Activities to Try at the Grocery Store

Do you find yourself often having to grocery shop with children? If so, you might be wondering how to make it a more entertaining and educational experience for them. Luckily, there are plenty of ways for children to be entertained and learn when browsing the grocery store aisles. Take a look below at 7 educational activities to try at the grocery store with your children.

7 Educational Activities to Try at the Grocery Store

1. Have some sight word fun

One of the easiest games for children to play is for them to point out the sight words they see. Many words will be recognizable to them even if they can’t read yet, since they associate them with the product. Examples would be Cheerios, Skittles, and their favorite juice perhaps. Encourage them to call out sight words as they see them, and see how many they can identify.

2. Go on a color hunt

Grocery stores are full of wonderful colors. Have children keep their eyes peeled for the colors of the rainbow. Have them write down each color as they spot it. Younger children can simply make a star on a piece of paper in the color that they see. Look for red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, black, and of course, brown.

3. Get crazy with coupons

Older children will like figuring out prices of products when coupons are used. Give them coupons (.50 and $1 coupons are easiest ) and ask them to figure out the final price of the item that the coupon is being used on.

4. Practice your percentages

Often times, a sale will be advertised as a percentage off the regular price. This is a great time to brush up on percentages. Point out scenarios within the store of percentage off sales and together solve the final price of the sale item.

5. Go on a shape hunt

There are many shapes both flat and three dimensional at the grocery store. Go on a shape hunt and write down the shapes you see. Example would include a cube, sphere, cone, triangle, square, and so many more.

6. Liquid and solid identification

Enjoy a little grocery store science. Grocery stores are full of examples of both liquids and solids. Make two columns on a piece of paper and in each one, write down examples of liquids and solids. Solids would be meat, candy bars, and vegetables. Liquids could be juice, coffee creamer, milk, and bottled water.

7. Have some fun with money

Before you check out, estimate what you think the bill will be. This is a great way to practice estimation skills. When you pay, talk about the bills you are using. You can also discuss the amount of change you will be getting back (if any). You can also watch your coupon savings come off together, and figure out the percentage that you reduced your bill by. Whew! Who knew there were so many educational opportunities at check out!

When you give these 7 educational activities to try at the grocery store a spin, you can turn any trip to the store into a learning experience.
