Family Movie Night- The Jungle Book

Setting aside a once or twice a month movie night for your entire family to enjoy together is fun, builds a close bond, and opens the door for deep discussions on developing character and other real life situations. Whether your favorite is the classic animated version or the new high-tech CGI Jungle book it makes a perfect choice for family movie night. But that doesn’t mean you have to just pop everybody in front of movie and have it end there!

You can incorporate all kinds of fun themed snacks and activities into the whole day, do them leading up to movie night or the week after to really expand the experience. Kids will learn while they enjoy focused time with you, and that is really what we all desire as parents. You can go all out or just focus on the “Bare necessities” for a fun and memorable family movie experience that everyone will love and talk about for ages with these ideas.

Family Movie Night- The Jungle Book

Invitations-For our once a month movie nights I make up simple little invitations to let the kids know the theme and get them excited about it . For the Jungle Book I scratched my invitations into bananas and set it on the table next to their breakfast the morning of- themes don’t have to require special or expensive props to be fun!

Decorations- Keep it simple and go for neutral items that can be reused in other themes like solid plastic tablecloths on the food table, hang green streamers from the doorway or maybe the fan blades for “vines”, borrow stuffed animals from the kids room- monkeys, elephants, tigers, etc… Small plastic animals can be used to top cupcakes, or lain around on tables to create a jungle feel easily and inexpensively.

Read books- There are a ton of great jungle themed books you can either purchase, borrow, or pick up at the library. Spread them out on the coffee table for the kids to look at while you ready the movie. These are a few we really love…

The Great Kapok Tree – Lynne Cherry

The Umbrella – Jan Brett

Slowly Slowly Slowly Said the Sloth – Eric Carle

If I ran the Rainforest – Bonnie Worth

Take a few weeks to  read the original Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling, a chapter a night will stretch it out!

Sneak in learning activities- Take a moment before the movie to point out on a map or globe where jungle Book takes place. India-Madhya Pradesh to be exact if you follow the original book by Rudyard Kipling.

Take turns acting like various jungle animals, play it like charades and have the others guess what you are trying to be.

Draw or paint  pictures from your favorite scenes in the movie.

Themed Snacks- Include one or both of these simple and silly snacks to add a little fun to the movie experience.

Jungle Juice– The kids and I like to make individual glasses of a simple limeade. Squeeze the juice of one lime into 1 1/2 cups water, stir in 2-3 tsp. granulated sugar. To melt the sugar better I stir it into a couple Tablespoons of warm water and then add to glass or you can add honey to sweeten and keep it healthier. Add a fun straw and you are done!

Mowgli Mix- You can grab ingredients for this at the store or raid your pantry. I love tossing together easy snack mixes like this using whatever I have on hand and mixing  together ingredients that were not very exciting on their own becomes fun and new for the kids.

Include popcorn, mm’s, craisins, raisins, teddy Grahams, chocolate chips, small marshmallows, pretzels, mini cookies, cereal, nuts, or any other small item you might have. Add a fun handmade sign to make it a little special, the other great thing about this snack is that it is a handy way to use up half empty boxes of cereal and snacks!

Take an hour to set up movie night for the family and make it a truly special night!
