Daisy Tells a Secret – Review and Giveaway – CLOSED

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and as a parent I feel very strongly about the need to protect my children.  In recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month, we have partnered with Daisy Tells A Secret for a very special review and giveaway.  Child abuse is an extremely sensitive topic, and to be 100% honest, it’s not really something that I wanted to speak to my children about.  I think most parents would agree that the idea of one of our children being hurt or abused by anyone is so horrible it’s difficult to even consider.  But the truth is, child abuse does occur.  According to Childhelp.org, there are over 3 million reported cases of child abuse in the United States annually, with almost 85% of sexual abuse cases occurring with a person that the child knows well.  As parents, it is our job to take every possible step to keep our children safe, and that means that we need to speak to our children about child abuse and what they should do if the unthinkable happens.

Daisy Tells A Secret is a remarkable video in which the animated Daisy is left alone with her Uncle Raven.  During a tickle game, Uncle Raven touches Daisy in a private area and tells her that she can’t tell anyone because it’s their secret.  Daisy tells her secret to a friend, and is overheard by her friend’s older sister, who explains the difference between good secrets and bad secrets, and encourages Daisy to tell her parents what happened.  Once Daisy’s mommy and daddy arrive home, Daisy finds the courage to tell her parents the secret.   Pretty uncomfortable subject matter right?  While it definitely isn’t the easiest topic to deal with, Daisy Tells A Secret manages to communicate to children that abuse is not their fault, and that this is a secret which they need to tell a safe adult right away.  My kids actually really enjoyed watching the video, and it opened the door for my five year old son and I to have a very important conversation about child abuse.

Although I really liked the kid’s portion of the video, I think what I appreciated the most was the comprehensive adult section.  This portion of the DVD, which parents should watch before showing Daisy Tells A Secret to their children, suggests talking points to bring up before, during, and after the video, explains strategies to help keep our children safe, describes signs that a child might have been abused, and offers detailed information about how to handle a possible abuse situation.  The information I learned while watching this video was absolutely invaluable, and I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to face my discomfort and speak to my children.  I honestly believe that every parent should see at least the parent portion of Daisy Tells A Secret, and that most children and families can benefit a great deal by viewing the video together.

I just want to say that I am very glad that there is something like "Daisy Tells a Secret" out there, because child/sexual abuse IS a delicate and awkward subject, but needs to be faced and discussed.

I am not a parent yet but hope to be one day…and whenever I do have kids, I would definitely want to somehow discuss this issue with them – it's a tough thing to do, but "Daisy Tells a Secret" would be a very welcome help and guide.

Please do not enter me in the giveaway – I just wanted to applaud the efforts of "Daisy Tells a Secret" and Giveaway Blogdom to spread the word about this great tool. I just hope more parents take advantage of this awesome chance! 🙂

  • RNSANE

For 21 years of my 45 years as a registered nurse, I was a forensic nurse for the city and county of San Francisco. I responded to adult cases of sexual assault and child sexual abuse case – 24/7 – and I did forensic child interviewing – for the police department and children's services. Often, parents did not believe their children which was truly heartbreaking. While children might occasionally make up stories, it did not happen often – and some of the crimes committed against children were atrocious. They often retracted because they did not want to break up their families and they blamed themselves for things that happened. A child is NEVER to blame.

How we react to our children, when they disclose this kind of information to us, may stop them from every telling us something again. We must be supportive and respond appropriately even though we would like to rant and rave and find a baseball bat – or something more lethal – and go after the person who harmed our child. LEAVE THAT TO THE POLICE. Your child does not need to have you in jail when he/she needs you most.

Believe him, go to the authories, and get help. Get therapy for your child and for yourself.
