Seneca Farm’s Oatmeal & Fruit Cups – Review & Giveaway

“It’s not groundbreaking news that breakfast provides us and our kids with the nutrition and fuel our bodies need.  And we all know that eating oatmeal and other whole grains are an essential part of a healthy diet and promote overall good health.  But, busy mornings and finicky kids can make it hard to find the time to make something that is both nutritious and delicious.”  (supplied from sponsor)

Breakfast is skipped generally by my husband in our household, but the kids and I never miss it.  If I miss it I tend to get pretty cranky and also very shaky.  I grew up on cold cereal most mornings and when my dad was off he would make pancakes (they were always “surprise” cakes and cajun is not that great :).  I know that my boys have years ahead of them for cold cereal breakfast and for now I try to make sure they get something hot.  Oatmeal counts as a hot and nutritious breakfast but it’s hard to mix up the flavors as we are all a tad picky.  Seneca Farms and I have partnered up to bring you the scoop on their new Oatmeal & Fruit cups.

Seneca Farm’s Oatmeal & Fruit cups were released in April and are sure to be a hit among those who try them.  I was surprised at how much I they didn’t really seem like the traditional oatmeal.  I would have leaned more towards and apple cinnamon crisp actually.  What child wouldn’t jump on that opportunity?  Each cup is six ounces and is available in two flavors at the moment, apple cinnamon and vanilla peach.  Seneca Farm’s is looking to release new flavors in the fall to include Oatmeal & Fruit Cranberry Apple, and Oatmeal – Maple & Brown Sugar.  I would like to see a strawberry flavor released as well.  My biggest surprise is that I have yet to have pre-made oatmeal that actually has real fruit chunks.  I couldn’t believe that they weren’t made with entirely a fruit puree or that the fruit pieces weren’t just pieces.  They were actually chunks not quite the size you would find in a can of fruit cocktail.  While it’s not fresh it is real and can be feed in a hurry.

What is America’s biggest problem with breakfast?  We are in a rush out the door.  Our society is so fast paced and mornings are tough.  For those of you rushing out the door in the morning I am sure you can spare 45 seconds.  Yes less than a minute and you have a nutritional filling breakfast for your kids.  For myself I found that I needed to partner it with a yogurt or breakfast bar as well.  Mostly because I tend not to eat a morning snack with the kids.  With the cups weighing in at a 170-180 calories, no trans fats or cholesterol, and is a great source of Vitamin C, it didn’t mind pairing it with another item.

Did you know that*…

  • Nearly 60% of U.S. parents of children ages 3-17 admit that their child skips breakfast, with more than half of U.S. Moms wishing their child ate a more nutritious breakfast.
  • 58% of U.S. Moms say they skip breakfast regularly. 46% of Moms who skip breakfast say they do so because they do not have enough time to prepare or eat it.
  • 57% of single adults say the number one reason they skip breakfast is that they don’t have enough time to prepare it.
  • While 71% of U.S. adults agree that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, 67% of those admit to skipping breakfast.
*Results of 2011 Children’s Nutrition Survey, conducted by Harris Interactive for Seneca Farms

With results like the above it’s one more reason for me to encourage breakfast in my children and get them off to a good start.  Seneca Farm’s Oatmeal & Fruit cups are a good way to add variety for families on the go.

I usually don't feel like eating breakfast when I first get up. My husband eats cereal or leftovers. I am a grandma but my kids use to eat cereal or a bagel etc on the run. Rita Spratlen rj_angel_house@yahoo.com

My family does eat breakfast every day. Now that my daughters are older, they prepare what they want to eat (cereal, oatmeal, waffles) before leaving the house. I've always stressed the importance of eating breakfast before leaving the house in the morning.
    Thanks!

During the summer, we don't really eat breakfast. We prefer to sleep in late. We DO, however, tend to eat nice brunches! 😉

We always eat breakfast. My son has some medicine he has to take with food, so we always have it. Plus, it gets him going in the morning.
