Fall Off The Fork Tender Swiss Steak

Growing up my mom made a Swiss Steak that is to die for! I loved it and have tried to replicate it several times with her recipe, but it just doesn’t seem to be going well for me. So I had to head out and make my own.Make your own delicious and tender swiss steak.

I think she is being greedy with her recipe, and I think she leaves a few ingredients out when I ask for it so that I will keep asking her to cook for me. You know how moms are. I know my mom adds a few dashes of Liquid Smoke to her’s, so if you have some in your fridge I would give it a try and let me know how it goes.

While I still miss my mom’s and request it often when I am home, I needed something that would work for my own house. I pulled together the below recipe and it became a hit with my family They love it because it is simple and doesn’t contain anything fancy. I like it because it is simple to prepare and I never have leftovers!

Swiss steak on a bed of egg noodles.

Fall Off The Fork Tender Swiss Steak

Ingredients

  • 6-8 Tenderized Steaks or 2 lbs of Thin Round Steak Cut Into Individual Pieces (you will need to tenderize)
  • 1/2 Cup Flour
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Salt
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Pepper
  • 1 Tablespoon Parsley (dried or fresh)
  • 1/2 An Onion Sliced Thinly
  • 28 Ounce Can Of Whole Peeled Tomatoes
  • 1 Sliced Red, Yellow Or Green Pepper (you only need one so pick your favorite)
  • 2 Tablespoons Of Oil

Instructions

    1. Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees.

    2. In a large resealable plastic bag combine flour, salt, pepper and parsley. Add steak a couple of pieces at a time and shake to coat both sides of the meat.

    3. Heat the 2 tablespoons of oil in skillet and brown steaks on both sides. Don't cook them all the way through just browning them.

    4. Place browned steaks in the bottom of a 9x13 pan. Layer with sliced onions and pepper. Pour whole tomatoes over the top of your layers and crush them gently with your hands as you pour them into the pan.

    5. Bake for 1 to 1 1/2 hours to finish cooking meat.

    6. Serve over cooked egg noodles or mashed potatoes.

Swiss Steak is a perfect crock-pot meal as well.  Instead of layering ingredients in a 9×13 pan after you have browned steak place into your crock-pot and cook on low for 6 hours.  I can’t get 8 in my crock-pot though so I stick with 4 but leave the rest of the ingredients the same.

oh oh, I”m swooning this sounds sooo good! I guess if you want your mom’s recipe, you have to go there and have her make it with you! But this sounds mighty tasty, and easy peasy! Nothing is as good as Mom’s, though!

I knew my mom had a bigger plan by making me love her food and then holding out the ingredients on me. 🙂

  • Swiss Steak is one of our family favorites, but it’s so hard getting it fall off the fork tender. I’d never thought to put it in the oven. Genius!

If you haven’t already, I’d love if you’d come join my How To Tuesday link party, too.

It is delicious! It is easy to make, requires some pretty cheap ingredients and can be made on the stove, in the oven or in a crock pot. Enjoy!

Steak Pizzaolia sounds delicious. I am always up for new recipes that model ones my family actually enjoyed.

  • Darcy

Ooh I should try this in my crock pot. We don’t have this very often because of how long it takes us usually (our recipe is all stove top).

The crock pot makes it so simple except the delicious smell make it hard for me to be home while it’s cooking. I just want to hover over it until it is ready to eat. Thank you for stopping by Darcy.

Moms do that, don’t they?! My mom makes an awesome corn casserole that I can’t duplicate, even with her recipes which includes very simple ingredients. I know she’s holding out on me!

I know right. My MIL makes the best fajitas and she told her recipe. I tried it several times and they were never right. At a Mother’s Day Brunch I heard her tell another about putting cilantro in her fajitas. Hello that was never relayed to me! Now my fajitas rival hers 🙂

I haven’t made swiss steak in such a long time! This looks delicious.

This is a lot like goulash right? Except goulash is stew pieces, but also served over egg noodles..it’s an awesome crockpot meal especially in this freezing weather.

It is similar and would work both ways. Growing up goulash for our house meant corn, carrots, tomatoes, green peppers, barley and stew meat. Really it meant clean out the fridge and let it all simmer for a couple of hours, right? Thank you for stopping by!
