Where are you from and tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Michaela and I was born in 1972 in the small town of Bobingen, Germany. I only lived in Germany for 2 and a half years before moving with my family back to the United States. I have lived in Germany, West Virginia, North Carolina and Ohio. Most of my childhood, teen and adult life have been spent in a town of about 15,000 people called Cambridge, Ohio. My Momma lives about 3 minutes from me and I suppose this is and has always been home to me. I visited Germany, for the first time since 1974; with my Momma in 2008. Germany is simply beautiful and I plan on going back in the fall of 2011 to see my Tante (Aunt) Edith once again. My only regret is not learning the language, though I do understand some of it when spoken.
I am currently working as a librarian and I love to write poetry, listen to music and read. I love cats and I currently have three inside babies: Gilligan, Lucie and Andee and two outside strays: Roscoe and Boscoe. I love animals and hope to one day have a job or “serious” hobby that plays a role in helping animals in some fashion.
Why did you start your Etsy shop?
Well, my Sister has been selling items on Etsy for almost three years now. When she first started out I would make a few hand sewn items or cards for her to sell in her store. I finally decided this year I wanted have a piece of Etsy to call my own! So I whipped up some pretties and plushies; got a few of my vintage items together and went to work! I really enjoy crafting and I was hoping that people would like the ideas that I came up with. I dig the items that I make, they come from such a comforting special place inside my mind; there is nothing like sharing a little bit of love with people.
How did you come up with your Etsy shop name?
Meeka is a nickname. MeekaMew was a joke started a long time ago by my boyfriend because of my love for cats. The name stuck and I decided to use it to start my account before I ever decided to sell on Etsy. Not very exciting huh, haha. 
What is your favorite item in your shop and why?
Favorite item huh…that is a hard one. I hand stitch my most of my items and that makes it hard to chose because, I become attached. I guess if I had to pick one and run it would be “Oralee”, my little gray owl. She is super soft and just looks so solemn and loving. It’s almost as if her expression says, “Hug me, I need your love”.
Do any of your pieces have a memorable story behind them?
My Woobies do, but I don’t know if I should tell it. Ok, you twisted my arm. When I was 18 years old I drew a little guy and named him a “Woobie” he was called Lil’Moe. When I was 24 I had the bright idea to have said Woobie tattooed on my body. So now he is with me for life. Tattoo put aside, he is adorable as heck and I decided he would make a grand plushy indeed. So there you have it, the true story of the Woobie.
What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?
I put a lot of love and tenderness into my items. As I mentioned before I hand sew everything. I have a sewing machine and frankly, I hate it! It is my Nemsis but we won’t go into that. *smiles* I prefer hand sewing and adore the end result. Since I never plan on mass producing my items this works great for me. None of my items have a pattern as I just cut out the shape as I see fit and stitch it accordingly; their names are as unique as their shapes are to me. No two will ever be exactly the same even if I use the same materials. I like the originality that brings to each lil’ character.
How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?
I like to sew and I love animals and other little creatures – it was pretty simple after that; all I needed was some time. 
If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?
My poetry is going to be my next venture. I already have the Etsy sight created but now I need the time to get this endeavor begun. I have the materials bought and things are in the works. Why should people buy handmade?
Because handmade is special. In most cases if someone is willing to take the time to come up with an idea and then make it from scratch; there is a lot of feelings in that piece. Who wouldn’t want something that means something?
Any advice on selling things handmade?
I am still a newbie of Etsy so I guess my only advice would be to network. Utilize the internet in it’s many forms to show people ‘what you got’. Like I am doing here with you on this great blog!!
Apart from creating beautiful pieces, what else do you do?
I love to write. Poetry first and foremost then, flash fiction, short stories and I have a few novels begun. I don’t know if I will ever finish those novels but I am having fun with them. With research, I found that only 1/2 of 1 % of anything submitted for publication would be accepted. Those odds weren’t so great so I decided I needed some other outlets for my creativity. 
Do you have plans for expansion?
Yes, and I can’t wait to begin PoesybyDesign.
