Where are you from and tell us a little about yourself?
I’m in central IL and a mother of three teenagers.  I have been involved in art for most of my life, but really threw myself into it about 5 years ago.  I have been experimenting with mediums, finding my niche and discovering my artistic voice during those years.  This year I am committed to making art my full time career and am excited about all the adventures ahead of me.

Why did you start your shop?
I have been a part of online communities for 14 years.  The friends I have made have been so dear to me and become an important part of my life.  When I decided to devote myself to building my art career, I couldn’t think of a better place to launch myself.

How did you come up with your shop name?
I wish I had a better story!  All the work I sell comes straight from my studio to your home, and its all signed with my name – Tau. 

What is your favorite item in your shop and why?

I love this painting so much!  (its currently hanging in my living room, where I get to see it every day)  I really labored over it and its rife with detail.  This one really speaks to me.

Do any of your pieces have a memorable story behind them?
The same painting is a message that too much of anything in our lives is dangerous.  Excess can lead to destruction, overwhelm, and illness.
This is symbolized by the ants and grackle – and the saffron crocus literally translates to “excess is dangerous” within the old art of flower meanings.
Its a reminder to live more simply and to be mindful of the choices we make in our lives, so we get the most from what we do.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?
I want to connect with people emotionally.  More than anything, I want my work to move people in the deeper recesses of their being.  A lot of my art plays on mythic themes and draws from life’s mysteries.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?
I love the vibrancy of paint and I am hooked on color.  I also really enjoy the immediacy of collage – its a very ‘plug and play’ medium. 

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?
I have dabbled in art dolls, and would enjoy having the chance to explore that medium more often.

Why should people buy handmade?
Buying handmade means having the opportunity to relate to the creator.  I think having the art in your home come from people you know imbues so much more meaning to the piece.  It also explains why 95% of the artwork in my home comes from friends!
Any advice on selling things handmade?
Relating with your audience is the best thing about selling online.  Take the time to communicate with your buyers – through social media, art fairs, and more.  Soon you will have a bevy of friends, instead of just customers.  You can never have too many friends!

Apart from creating beautiful pieces, what else do you do?
I parent my three talented kids!  My eldest is working towards going to college, my middle son attends an arts high school for ballet, and my daughter works on her own art and is heavily involved in our local theater.  They consistently inspire me…. and drive me crazy in equal measure.  😉

I’m working on my career full time this year, and look forward to creating more large paintings and offering prints.
