What is truly the difference between regular yogurt and Greek yogurt? Regular yogurt is strained twice, while Greek yogurt is strained three times to remove more whey (leaving a thicker consistency).
The benefits of Greek yogurt and the extra straining process is that you will have a richer and creamier taste which I quickly learned once opening Yoplait Greek 100. Can you believe this was my first experience with Greek yogurt? I find it hard to believe as my children are part of the 28% of Americans who eat yogurt daily.
The Benefits of Greek Yogurt
Protein – Greek yogurt has almost double the protein of regular yogurt.
Carbohydrates – Greek yogurt has fewer carbohydrates than regular yogurt.
Calcium – Regular yogurt has about three times the calcium of Greek yogurt.
Sodium – Greek yogurt has half the sodium of regular yogurt.
Texture – Greek yogurt is much thicker and creamier than regular yogurt because of the third straining process.
Disadvantages of Greek Yogurt
Calcium – During the third straining process some of the calcium is removed from Greek yogurt.
Cost – Greek yogurt also costs more because the extra straining requires much more milk, so it’s a more concentrated source of protein.
Fat – Often times Greek yogurt can be higher in calories and fat than regular yogurt. However, low fat/calorie choices like Greek 100 from Yoplait are a great choice to combat this disadvantage.
My Thoughts on Greek Yogurt 100
Now that we know some benefits and some disadvantages, what are my thoughts on Greek 100 by Yoplait? I loved it! Out of the six delicious flavors (Strawberry, Black Cherry, Mixed Berry, Vanilla, Peach and Key Lime ) I was sent Vanilla and Mixed Berry for the boys and I’s tasting pleasure. We shared the mixed berry at the park one day and was pleasantly surprised at how creamy and delicious the yogurt was. I couldn’t believe that I had been missing out on this full creamy texture all this time.
We used the vanilla flavor as a dressing for our fruit salad which is a massive hit at any meal we serve. While we don’t really have a problem getting the boys to eat their fruits combining apples, grapes, mandarin oranges and peaches and using a container of vanilla yogurt sure seems to mix things up once in awhile and was a great way to give Greek 100 a shot. So far Greek yogurt has made it’s way into our fridge and will have a permanent spot. Will we be giving up regular yogurt? Not entirely but we will be making swaps in our diet and mixing the two. Plus knowing that both of these flavors are only 100 calories was a huge perk!

13 years agoI bought a few of these yogurts in vanilla and loved them…I then went back and bought a case. I was eating a couple of these a day, until I realized this is what was making me feel light-headed, hot flashes, and nausea. Obviously I’m allergic to something in this yogurt! Anyone else had this reaction?
