Meet Etsy Shop Mabelise and giveaway – CLOSED

Where are you from and tell us a little about yourself.
I lived the first part of my childhood in Germany and moved to the US at age 11. My family and I lived in California for a short while and then for my teenage years we lived in Connecticut. After high school I moved up to Boston for college and fell in love with the city. I still live here now with my husband and two little girls.

Why did you start your Etsy shop.
I’ve known about Etsy for a long time, my sister recommended it to me when it first started out in the mid 2000’s and I would always browse and marvel at all the amazing shop on the site and was so tempted to start a shop of my own. Only problem was I didn’t really have a unique product to offer. I also just had my first daughter and was working full-time and so I just never got around to it. Then about a year after I had my second daughter I started sewing little lovey dolls for her. Unlike her sister, she had a really hard time sleeping at night and woke up probably 4 or 5 times a night looking for her pacifier. I decided that I needed to come up with some kind of doll that I could attach her binky to so she could easily find it in her crib at night. It needed to be somewhat big and really cuddly. After several prototypes I came up with the design that I currently sell in my Etsy shop. She immediately took to her Blossom Baby and my husband and I were able to enjoy more peaceful nights. She is now over two years old and still cuddles with her Blossom Baby.

How did you come up with your Etsy shop name?
I originally planned on naming my shop Blossom Babies, but quickly found that it was already a shop name in use. So I started brainstorming new ideas. I was driving in the car with my sister one day and ran a few ideas by her. I kept coming back to naming the shop after my two girls but couldn’t decide which order sounded better. Elise and Mabel or Mabel and Elise. My sister simply said why not combine the two names into one name and right then and there in my car, Mabelise was born.

What is your favorite item in your shop?

My favorite item in my shop is Blossom Baby made with the same fabrics that I originally used to make my daughters. The doll has a pink dimple dot minky cape and the body is made with a gorgeous flannel print that is aqua and has all different kinds of beautiful flowers on it.

Do any of your pieces have a memorable story behind them?
I am about to start working on a Blossom Baby for a friend. She will be giving the doll as a gift to her friend’s baby who will be born early next year. Shortly after her birth however, her dad will be deploying for the middle east, so the doll will be made with one of his shirts. This way she will be able to cuddle with her daddy even as he is so far away.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?
I guess the message I would like to convey through these dolls is simply the love that I have for my children; and the hope that these items can bring comfort to other children as they have to my own.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?
From the first moment I felt dimple dot minky fabric I fell in love with it. I made a small blanket for my first daughter out of it and just loved the softness of it so much. When I had my second daughter I made her entire crib set using minky and cotton fabrics. I’m truly obsessed with minky.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?
I am actually an architect by training and so I do have another medium through which I express my creativity, although no where near as soft as the other. I do residential design and have recently started my own design firm.

Why should people buy handmade?
People should buy handmade items because they will receive a truly unique and personalized product that simply cannot be duplicated through mass production. I also think it is a great and important way to support artists and small businesses.

Any advice on selling things handmade?
Really my only advice is to love what you make and put love into every item that you do make. I never ship anything out to a customer until I can honestly say that I am happy with the quality of the item and that it is something I would give as a gift to my closest friends and family. I have had many wonderful customers with amazing stories and I feel honored to have been chosen by them to make something special for the most precious people in their lives.

Apart from creating beautiful pieces, what else do you do?
Thank you so much for that wonderful compliment. I am a work from home mom. I am raising my two little girls along with my husband, and at the same time I am starting out with my own residential architecture firm.

Do you have plans for expansion?
Once the holidays are over, I am planning on contacting local boutiques to see if they would be interested in carrying my product. My absolute dream would be to get enough demand for my security blanket dolls that I could open up a little studio and hire maybe a couple of people to help me sew the dolls and continue to come up with new product ideas. My sister has already requested a position. That would really be a dream come true for me.

Any other sites you can be found on?
I am still relatively new on Etsy and with this whole venture in general. I only started designing these dolls a little over one year ago and have been on Etsy for less than one year. I’m still learning a lot and for now am only concentrating on Etsy. I do have a facebook page (facebook.com/mabelise) but that’s it for the moment. I’ve purchased the domain mabelise.com already and do plan on developing it as a site in the upcoming year.

Anything else you would like us to know?
I would just like to thank you and all your readers for your interest in my store and my products. It is just such a wonderful feeling to find out other people like something that I have put so much heart and soul into.
