Where are you from and tell us a little about yourself?
I am originally from Utah (Provo) but have lived in Orange County, California for about 9 years. I am married and a stay at home mom to 4 kids (well, they used to be kids). I have a yours, mine and ours family. My husband has a son 23, who still lives in Utah, and then I have my daughter 20, and 3 boys, 18, 14 and 11. The youngest is the “ours” in the group.

Why did you start your Etsy shop?
I have always been a crafter but got away from it for a while as a busy life with young children took over. Recently, I began creating again; making gifts for friends and family, but found I couldn’t stop! I kept making things and trying new things and wanted to make more. I decided to try selling at a boutique. While there, person after person asked, “Are you on Etsy”? I had to check it out, next thing you know, I have an Etsy shop!


How did you come up with your Etsy shop name?
Well, I guess some would say, that I have a distinctive laugh/giggle…. Through the years I have often been told that I sound like Betty Rubble and I adopted the nickname Betty, so, I thought it would be fun to use the name for my shop.


What is your favorite item in your shop and why?
Hmmm, hard to say, but I guess either the photo boards or the ponytail holders because I feel those ideas were the most original and the ones I’m most proud of.


Do any of your pieces have a memorable story behind them?
The idea for the interchangeable ponytail holders came to me on one of those long sleepless nights at about 2 in the morning! I’m glad I remembered it the next day… 😉

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?
I just enjoy the opportunity craft, create, share and have fun!


How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?
I am a fabric-aholic, so it was easy for me to turn to fabric as a medium. I also have a new love of beads and vintage items. I love mixing different mediums and creating something new.


If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?
I think I’d like to learn how to create art with the computer. My daughter has been taking photography classes and then using photoshop and other programs to create with and I think it would be interesting and fun to try.


Why should people buy handmade?
Handmade items are so much more unique and personal. There is passion and a story behind every piece. You just can’t get that from mass produced items.


Any advice on selling things handmade?
If selling face to face it’s important to talk up your items. Never assume the customer knows what the item is, what it’s made of or what it’s used for etc.. Sometimes they are just afraid to ask but, when you share a little about the item or show them how to use it, you get sparks of interest.


Apart from creating beautiful pieces, what else do you do?
Well, other the usual activities that come from being a wife and mother… I enjoy going to garage sales with my husband. We go every Saturday. I love finding vintage items and items to craft with. I also collect Scottie dogs and love finding a vintage Scottie at a sale! I am active and serve in my church and teach a group of 3 year olds every Sunday.

Do you have plans for expansion?
I would like to build up a better inventory in my shop plus I have some new items that are ready to be added. I have also though about opening a second shop to sell some of my vintage finds.
