Thomas The Tank Day At The Quarry Review and Giveaway (Birthday Bash) – CLOSED

What do Thomas The Tank and Mega Bloks have in common?  The fact that thousands of little boys and girls love them.  I have to admit that I love them.  We never owned a lot of blocks growing up but that’s partially because the neighbors (April and her brother) had a 15 gallon tote worth.  Because I didn’t own a lot of blocks and always wanted them it’s the one of the few things that I actually scout out in the store, along with trains.  The new sets from Mega Bloks is a perfect combination for me.  We were recently given the opportunity to review Busy Day At The Quarry by Mega Bloks.
When this came in the mail I waited a few days before I would let Coulter even see it.  I was debating whether he would actually get it or not or if it would become Corbin’s first birthday present, but Coulter spotted it and had it opened before I knew what was happening.  I let him have it and it wasn’t long before I heard “Mom”, so Cory went over on the floor with the boys and started putting it together.  The pieces are simple and the instructions were easy to read as they were pictures.  I was a bit surprised that it had instructions as “kits” are a new adventure to me, however, to truly make the Quarry work properly you must put it together exactly as instructed.  I think if you had the other kits or just blocks in general there would be a bit more leeway which for a 3 year old who is clumsy and rough it would save my sanity.  Coulter and I ended up taking it to his room because Corbin was destroying it as fast as we could get it put together, this made things a bit more difficult as our carpet isn’t exactly flat but it didn’t destroy any of the awe factor or time played with it.  
The age recommendation on this set is three which is probably appropriate because of the little rocks that come with the set.  They could be a choking hazard for the little ones.  To solve this problem we just took them out and put them in a ziploc for later use.  Once Corbin is older and past the mouth stage than we will pull them back out.  Besides this factor you could really use this set as soon as your child can put together blocks with assistance and race the train down the tracks.   
One of the best things?  The blue mountain part of the quarry is actually a storage box for the pieces.  This works wonders so that you don’t get the pieces strewn all over the house and you don’t have to worry about the pieces getting lost (or that’s the hope anyway).  I like the fact that the storage box is actually skinny and taller because that’s how my shelves are set up.  Less surface space taken up.
The only problem, is that I can’t get Coulter to leave the train at home!  He takes it to daycare, the store, outside, inside and even sleeps with it.  What a great set and I look forward to having many more in the house!
