With the smurfs hitting the big screen this summer we are all bound to have some memories (at least those over 20). I know that I have a few in my day. Warner Bros recently sent me a two DVD set that contained several of the true smurf cartoons. It just so happened that these came in while my nephew and nieces were here. Perfect opportunity to give them a little bit of schooling. They had no clue what they were getting into. We enjoyed 2 discs with the following 10 episodes:
- Smurf Van Winkle – Lazy is tricked into believing he’s slept his life away.
- Revenge of the Smurfs – The Smurfs try to get even with an army that’s stormed their village.
- Magic Fountain – The Smurfs search for a magic fountain.
- Smurf Me No Flowers – Lazy is led to believe he has only a few days to live.
- The Cursed Country – An evil master captures Smurfs to work in his diamond mine.
- The Blue Plague – Brainy gives the Smurfs a meal that makes them feel like chickens.
- The Ring of Castellac – The Smurfs return a drugged duke to his rightful place.
- A Mere Truffle – Tracker loses his memory while leading the Smurfs on a truffle hunt.
- Gormandizing Greedy – Greedy gains weight after a diet of sweets and desserts.
- Sister Smurf – Smurfette and a young girl are held captive by an old hag.
While the youngers didn’t really know what Smurfs truly were this made it easy for them to be captavated for a few hours. All four of the kids (Corbin can care less about tv so far) sat down and I didn’t hear a peep out of them while I made dinner an did some laundry. It was great to pop in and out on them and see the memories come back. The Blue Plague was the kid’s favorite unanimously. Some good old fashioned humor going on there along with some great messages that still remain popular and is what helps makes Smurfs so popular by children and adults. Messages about love, friendship and kindness set in place by unique characters that we can all relate to. It’s been 30 years and we all can recall something about the Smurfs (especially the theme song)! Of course after the shows were over this did mean that I had four days of Smurfette on my hands from the two girls.
For those of us wanting to walk down memory lane…with the original.
