Barefoot Books – Review and Giveaway – CLOSED

Barefoot Books, a mom-created company dedicated to nurturing a child’s imagination, and instilling children with respect for diversity and a love for the planet, is an amazing organization that I am honored to tell you all about today.  Over the past couple of weeks, I have spent hours with my kids playing games and singing songs that I was able to download from the Barefoot Books website, and we are all loving the children’s book and pack of gardening activities I received from Barefoot Books to review.
Who’s in the Garden, written by Phillis Gershator and illustrated by Jill McDonald, is a great children’s book with peek-a-boo holes your little one will love to explore.  As a mommy, I am thrilled with the amazing illustrations featured in this book.  It is very rare to come across any book which displays such artistic creativity and appeal to children as Who’s in the Garden.  Every page gives us a new opportunity to count, to learn colors, and to practice new words.  As a child, my two-year old daughter is in love with this book.  It is definitely geared towards younger children (my five year old son has no patience for it at all), but June is well on her way to memorizing each page.  Every day we read Who’s in the Garden at least three or four times, and every time we read it, we find something new to explore. As an added bonus, my nine month old daughter is just learning to turn pages (which is one of my favorite developmental stages because I can keep the baby busy for hours just turning pages back and forth), and she figured out this new skill while reading Who’s in the Garden, which means this book will always have a special place in my heart. 
We also received the Kid’s Garden card set of indoor and outdoor activities, written by Whitney Cohen of the Life Labe Science Program, and illustrated by Roberta Arenson. This is, bar none, my son’s favorite item I’ve ever gotten to review.  The activity cards are broken down into color-coded categories such as Exploring the Garden, Planting and Growing, Fun with Plants, Discovering Creatures, and Creating Garden Art (are you noticing a theme yet?)  Each card tells you how long the activity should take, when is the optimal time of year to do it, what materials you’ll need, and whether it is an indoor activity, an outdoor activity, or both.  We’ve already spent many hours building our garden cameras, planning our rainbow garden, and working on corn husk dolls (it’s not quite gardening season around here, but stay tuned for pictures of our gardening artwork over the next several months.)  If I could change the cards at all, it would only be to have a recommended age listed on each activity.  As a mother of three kids at very different developmental stages, I usually rely on recommended ages to choose my activities.  These cards don’t offer a recommended age, but it really only takes a few minutes to figure out if an activity is age-appropriate for my kids. 

There is so much to love about Barefoot Books, it’s hard to tell you enough about them in the limited space I have.  I love the company’s mission to promote a love for the environment, to encourage respect for diversity, and to stimulate the imagination.  I REALLY love the beautiful illustrations that come standard in all Barefoot Books products.  I’m fascinated with the Barefoot Books website, the children’s games and songs they offer for free, and the amazingly positive message inherent to every webpage.  Basically, I love Barefoot Books.  (I know, I sound like a greeting card, but it’s hard not to gush over such an amazing company.)
