Chicken Soup for the Soul: Country Music – CLOSED

Anybody who knows me knows that I am a country girl.  I always have been and always will be.  Country music is a huge part of this and of my life.  If you walk into my house you can usually hear Miranda Lambert, Reba, Garth Brooks or Lady Antebelum coming from some music source in my house.  When the lastest Chicken Soup for the Soul: Country Music hit my door I was ready for a good read.

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Country Music is filled with 101 stories behind our favorite country songs.  While you can hear Reba coming from a stereo in my house and even if you don’t listen to country music you know her name, but do you know the story behind any of her songs?  Or who actually has written any of them for that matter?  While music artists do their fair share of writing I can’t think of one who does their own writing solely and sometimes those who actually write them get pushed to the back burner.  I enjoyed getting to know some of the authors behind some of my favorite songs I listen to.  I could tell you that Garth Brooks sings unanswered prayers but I never would have known that Pat Alger had written Unanswered Prayers (with help from Garth Brooks, and Larry Bastian) after running into a highschool sweetheart.  They both quickly realized that their lives had went in different directions and that they were better people because of it.

How about the song Holes in the Floor of Heaven?  Recorded by Steve Wariner but the story was started one night when author Billy Kirsch’s wife read that line in a novel and it stuck with him.  Months later when Billy’s grandmother passed away he took his seven year old daughter to the funeral in New York.  During their flight his daughter looked out the window at sunset and said “I think I see God on his throne and I think I see Nanna Molly sitting next to him.”.  A story was written that from there and a song was born that had minor changes made like “eight years old” and a “little boy”.

A country girl couldn’t have asked for a better Chicken Soup for the Soul!  For those of you who love to sing along but don’t know the words….Chicken Soup for the Soul has included the lyrics to all 101 songs mentioned,  that’s a great bonus in my book!

Don't Cry Joni by Conway Twitty has been my favorite song since I was a little kid. The special meaning it has to me now is that it reminds me of listening to it with my dad as a little girl.

My daughter and I are huge country music fans. I love the song "Valentine" by Martina McBride. It was a song I heard while my husband and I were dating and it became our song.
