Where are you from and tell us a little about yourself?
I am originally from Israel, but I’ve been living in Michigan for the last 2 years with my husband and two rebellious cats. I am drawn to minimalism and was vegetarian/vegan most of my life.

Why did you start your Etsy shop?
It all started when we moved into our new house. I was looking through my photographs and thinking about what would fit my kitchen. My husband argued that photographs of fruit and the like would be more appropriate then pictures of the ocean. I thought it would be boring and obvious, but then gave it a try. That’s how I discovered my love of fruit photography! My store was opened because I thought people would be happy to see unique, bright modern kitchen decor.

How did you come up with your Etsy shop name?
My name (Adva) means “one ripple” in Hebrew. I believe that beautiful art can create something of a ripple effect in your life by cheering you up by simply being bright and colorful.

What is your favorite item in your shop and why?
I must say that if I had to pick (cause I do love it all)…. Probably the mint. I love mint so much in tea, water and food and it is just beautiful, happy and bright. The minimalism in those photographs makes me feel like they could be hung anywhere and everywhere which I think is important.

Do any of your pieces have a memorable story behind them?

Photographing the onion shots in the cold outside at like 7 am on a Saturday morning. The idea came to mind at 5 am and I just had to get it done!

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?
That fruit and veggies are not only beautiful and delicious. Food objects have a personality and years of evolution behind them that makes them who they are today. Just like people, animals or places.


How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?
Photography is just such a great creative outlet. I was just drawn to it.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Probably home decor. I enjoy the visual aspect of choosing items and arranging them to create the perfect personalized space.

Why should people buy handmade?
Because you aren’t just supporting someone’s dreams and ambitions. I think uniqueness is a valuable, and art is valuable. Consumerism isn’t a mortal sin, but being a selective consumer who cares where the money goes is certainly better than simply supporting companies who care very little about you or the environment. Handmade means someone toiled away and put his or her love and sweat into what you purchase. And they will stand behind it.

Any advice on selling things handmade?
Not yet! But probably being active and confident about what you do is surely a positive habit.

Apart from creating beautiful pieces, what else do you do?
I am a substitute teacher, and will be going back to school to get my teaching certificate. I already have a B.A. in International Relations, but I am passionate about teaching English as a second language.

Do you have plans for expansion?
I hope to offer wedding photography in the Michigan area this coming summer.

Try eating Kale. I didn’t think much of it before but it’s a new favorite. Quinoa is pretty delicious too.
