Where are you from and tell us a little about yourself?
Aurora, Colorado – a suburb of Denver.  I am married and am the mother of two brilliant sons two beautiful daughters-in-law, one devoted dog and one extremely independent cat.  I worked in public schools, public relations and cable television until I decided it was time to do something I really wanted to do.  🙂
Why did you start your Etsy shop?
Etsy offers the perfect venue for my wares.  It has allowed me to continue working from my home studio and yet reach a worldwide audience.
How did you come up with your Etsy shop name?
It is simply a combination of my initials and what I do. 🙂  Although the main focus of my shop is stuffed animals/plushies – whatever you may call them, I do offer other items and never want to limit myself.
What is your favorite item in your shop and why?
Probably Coco the Dog.  He was one of my first designs and still makes me smile.  I use a graphic version of him as my logo.
Do any of your pieces have a memorable story behind them?
Not so much one particular item, but a group of items are special to me.  A couple of years ago I started a Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign and designed several pink Wee Ones, with 10% of each sale going to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.  I have been fortunate to have them featured twice on our local Denver NBC affiliate’s afternoon newscast as part of their Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign during the month of October.  Additionally, the three gift shops I do consignment with joined in my campaign and carry the BC Buddy Wee Ones year ’round.  All this is extra special to me because two of my aunts have suffered from breast cancer and it’s lasting after-effects.
What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?
Everyone – I mean everyone – needs a little whimsy in their life.  🙂  I really  just want to make people smile and make them happy.  And if it allows me a venue in which to give back in some way, all the better!

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?
I grew up sewing, but once my boys were in school and I went back to work I had little time for it.  So when (many years later)  I had time to do something I really enjoyed doing, I yearned to do something tactile.  I started sketching and making patterns, brought out my sewing machine and the rest is history. 

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Photography and writing.  I carry a camera or two (ok, sometimes three and a couple of lenses…) with me all the time.  I have another Etsy shop and website with my photographs and have self-published a few books.  I shoot mostly nature photography because being in nature is as necessary to me as breathing.

Why should people buy handmade?
One of my most important inspirations is a quote from Peter Schiff, an American Economist.  He simply said, [For our economy to survive] “We have to start making stuff again.”   Something that is handcrafted is truly one of a kind and very special.  There are so many talented designers, artisans and artists in the world; why would you want one of a million item that came off a manufacturer’s assembly line?


Any advice on selling things handmade?
Take time to make a really quality product; quality is more important than quantity.  But the absolute most important thing – immediate, clear, friendly and helpful communication with your customers; and always give them more than they expect.  Always.

Apart from creating beautiful pieces, what else do you do?

Aw, thank you.  My first response to that is – nothing.  I’m pretty much a workaholic – but that’s what happens when your studio is in your home and you love what you do.  🙂  My home borders a huge State Park and I walk my dog every morning – camera in hand of course.  I’m addicted to Netflix and you can usually find a movie streaming in my studio.

Do you have plans for expansion?
I am constantly dreaming up new ideas and designs for new products – that is my favorite thing to do.  I am always keeping my eye out for new brick ‘n mortar gift shops to partner with as well.

Anything else you would like us to know?

Something that is really important to me is giving back. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to do so.   As I mentioned I have an ongoing campaign for Breast Cancer Awareness, with donations going to Susan G Komen for the Cure.  I also support the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Colorado; The American Heart Association and Heart Health Month (February); “Share Our Strength” (working to end hunger for kids in America) and (in the near future) a local animal rescue organization.  And thank you for the opportunity to share my Etsy shop!
