The Dragon and the Turtle Go On Safari Review and Giveaway – CLOSED

 
This is the second book I have received from the Dragon and the Turtle series and I just adore both of them.  The series is written by Donita K. Paul and Evangeline Denmark, illustrated by Vincent Nguyen.  They both contain lessons of friendship and helping each other out. 
 
In The Dragon and the Turtle Go On Safari, Padraig and Roger plan to spend the night outside while on their safari, after all they are adventurous explorers.  As they head outside for the night Padraig didn’t realize that it would be so dark.  Roger assures him as he blows out his marshmallow that they have a fire and it’s a roarin’ good one that will keep them safe. 
 
As the adventure goes on they hear screeching noises, rustling, and thuds.  As the night goes on Roger and Padraig introduce new animals that can be found while on a safari.  As they head back to the tent Padraig has become afraid to close his eyes.  They spend most of the rest of the night reassuring each other that it’s ok and learning about being adventurers. 
 
I have to admit that while I knew they were in a backyard it did take me sometimes to realize that the animals were actually part of their imagination.  I loved how the author incorporated this into the story but keep in mind that a younger child is going to struggle with knowing this as well.  Until the end when you think they are trying to help a leopard they slip and call it a kitten and this is when I realized the rest of the animals were part of the imagination.  Now I love books that use the imagination and as long as you spend sometime discussing this so the children know, it made a great twist. 
 
I would recommend this book for ages starting at 6 really.  While I read it to Coulter I had to do a lot of summarizing in order for us to make it through the 40 pages.  On the inside of the back cover are some suggestions to discuss with your children.  For example it has you ask your child “What are some things you do with a friend that might be scary?”  
I liked the long version of The Dragon and the Turtle Go On Safari and Coulter loved the short version.  As he grows it will be a story that we can continue to grow on and use as a valuable teaching tool of friendship.

    I liked reading about the camping experiences in the comments. Our family did not camp when I was a child. I loved the few times we camped as my kids were growing up. But I have to admit, I like a motel room best.

    My son loves camping by the seaside and going crabbing with friends. He does more running away than catching them, but he loves it all the same. One time we took both him and his sister and roasted all our food in the fire. My son has discovered roasted corn on the cob and butter to be his fave camping food.
