Is Owning a Pet a Necessity or Luxury

It is a staple of nearly every family film- the beloved dog or cat, running around causing mischief and giving unfaltering affection to their owners. These pets have become synonymous with the image of a happy, modern family, but is this the case in reality? With a great love of pets, comes a great responsibility and there is much more to consider than just whether or not we like animals. On top of a busy working life, the hectic up and downs of raising children, and trying to get all the little chores done, is there still room for a pet in a families schedule?

Is a pet a must or a luxury for a family?

We Love Our Pets

The idea that dogs are man’s best friends has been a popular phrase existing for years and, now, after extensive research by academics in the Great Britain, the saying might hold a lot of truth. In The Washington Post, it was reported that Dr John Bradshaw had concluded that our reasons for wanting to own pets are much more than superficial. It isn’t because we think they are cute or for the calming benefits of owning a pet, it is actually because the companionship of a pet is deeply rooted in our very human nature! This concept is definitely food for thought for those who don’t believe pets are a necessity.

Part of the family

The love of pets is one thing, but is having the company of a dog, for example, needed when you are surrounded by your family? An article published by Psychology Today suggests that pets hold a very prized position in our home life. In a study, pet owners had to rank how close they were too different members of the family, and the pets would rank as high as significant others and children.

Making the Right Choices

It is fair to assume, from this evidence, that pets are far more integral to a family unit than perhaps we first thought but this still leaves some issues such as how to fit having a pet around work and learning how to take care of a specific animal. This problem, however, is minor when you consider the wealth of advice out there!

For example, let’s say a family is looking to own a dog, what do they need to do?

They need to decide what breed of dog would suit their family. A Husky dog requires a lot of walking and would be ideal for a family who was able to take it out every day for long periods of time to run and play. A family in a smaller house in a more urban area might choose a lap dog where the animal only needs a little bit of exercise each day.

Getting advice on what a dog needs is also paramount, but nowadays this is easy with the internet on your side. As an example, the website Paw Castle offers reviews on dog-related products and has online advice on everything health to behavior.

It is obvious pets hold a very special place in family life and, when taking care of them can be managed by making informed decisions, there is nothing stopping you.
