As a mother, I try to stay calm about most situations.  I have to admit though that I often find myself in moments of anxiety about the state of our planet.  Whether or not you believe that global warming is a problem or take the time to recycle, it’s hard to ignore the drastic impact humans have had on the Earth.  I love living in New Mexico, but I have to say that this is an extremely dirty place.  There is trash and litter everywhere we look, and it makes it difficult to not join in.  When a piece of trash falls out of my car and lands on a pile of litter, it is really tough to grab a trash bag and clean up the whole pile – but someone has to do it right?  That question is rhetorical, but the truth is, a LOT of someones are needed to clean up this planet.  Sometimes it seems like such a huge job I just want to close my eyes and ignore the problem, but that only makes the problem worse.  So, in addition to recycling, picking up my trash and any other litter I see laying around whenever I can, and turning off the lights when I leave a room, I am also trying to teach my children about the importance of “going green.”
Overall, I was extremely impressed by all of the Little Green Books.  I Can Save the Ocean!: The Little Green Monster Cleans up the Beach by Alison Inches is a fantastic story that describes how litter and waste end up in our oceans, and how we can stop it from getting there.  I got the story to teach my kids about the subject, but I actually learned a lot too.  It’s easy to forget that everything that goes into our gutters eventually makes its way to the ocean, and I guess I’ve forgotten that lesson too.  Do You See?: A Lift-the-Flap Book About Endangered Animals by Stephen Krensky is a great book for very young children.  I was particularly interested in reviewing this book, because I wondered if a book made of recycled material would be strong enough to support a “lift-flap” design.  Not only is it strong enough, it’s actually stronger than most of the lift-flap books we have, and my daughter LOVES it!  Easy to Be Green: Simple Activities You Can Do to Save the Earth by Ellie O’Ryan is a fun and creative activity book all about saving the planet that has kept my son busy for hours.  And The Polar Bears’ Home by Lara Bergen is a touching story about the very real and devastating melting of the polar ice-caps, and how that is impacting the animals of the Arctic.  These books are a must-have for all young children. In addition to teaching them about the Earth and how to save it, they are also an excellent source of interesting and vocabulary-building stories. I am thrilled to have had the chance to review Little Green Books, and I hope that you all get a chance to check the company out and spend some time teaching your children, students, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren these vital lessons about our planet!
