Meet Etsy Owner Julie from My Good Babushka

Let’s all take a moment to meet Etsy store owner Julie from My Good Babushka.  Julie has a variety of work available in her shop including painting, embroidery, macabre, drawings, knitting and prints.  Please take a moment to browse around her store.

Where are you from and tell us a little about yourself?
I am from Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania.  I’m 36, married and have two small boys.  I like oddities, ghost stories, cryptozoology, fairy tales, nursery rhymes, books, forests, and anatomical illustrations.
How did you come up with the name for your Etsy store?
I am the namesake of my Polish grandmother.  She would put on her babushka – a large kerchief worn over the head- to protect her hairdo when she came out of the beauty shop.  She is no longer with us, but in her memory I decided to name my enterprise “My Good Babushka“.
You offer a variety of items in your store, what is your favorite type of item to make or create?
I like painting best of all.  I turn out very few embroidery pieces, but that process seems very similar to painting.  I knit to keep my hands busy when I’m watching TV, so even though I do it neatly and compulsively, I don’t think of myself as an accomplished or creative knitter.
What is your experience or background?
I began taking academic courses in drawing and painting at the age of 14.  I completed my degree in art at the age of 24, at Pennsylvania State University.  I graduated with a dual major in art and philosophy.  I have continued my studies in painting, but have become somewhat lax and forgetful about philosophy.

What is your inspiration for your paintings, prints, embroidery, etc?
Oh, gallows humor, the work of Edward Gorey.  I love medieval art, the surrealists, early anatomical illustrations, and antique childrens books, which I would also cite as my main influences.
Do you have plans for expansion?

I plan to plod along.  I will be at the Horror Realm Convention 2010 September 17-19th at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh.  I will have some new prints to exhibit at the this event.  Here is it’s web address:  http://www.horrorrealmcon.com/  When my children are both in school, I hope to attend more live events and work on my upcoming books.

Anything else you would like us to know?

Yes.  I have a book out right now.  I wrote a story in verse and illustrated it with 30 original paintings.  It was a labor that took me ten years to complete, and I am very happy with it.  It is a story of the mysterious disappearance of a sideshow performer from a traveling carnival.  Unfortunately, Blurb does not have a very good address.  You can find it here:  http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/1238934 or search for the title On a Windy Night Ludmila the Clown Went Missing in the Blurb bookstore under the Comics and Graphic Novels section.  Or better yet, there is a link on my blog: http://www.mygoodbabushka.blogspot.com

**Remember to take a minute to stop by and visit My Good Babushka.  If you come back here and leave a comment of your favorite item from her shop or you friend her on her blog you will receive five bonus entries to leave on any giveaway/s of your choice.  Bonus offer expires at midnight 10/5.
