Meet Etsy Owner KhaliNouveau and giveaway – CLOSED

Where are you from and tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Aiysha Khaalid, nickname Khali. I’m a painter, an illustrator, a mixed media artist, and crafter. I was born in Bronx, NYC but raised in Southern New Hampshire. I am a middle child of five siblings and the only one with the artistic talent. I graduated in Fine Arts from a small private art collage in Massachusetts. I enjoyed my experienced in art school, made friends with talented artists, and learned from the best art teachers. I love to travel and continue to have many adventures around the world while I am still young. I once lived abroad in the Middle East where I worked as an art coordinator in a contemporary art gallery in Dubai. Living abroad was exciting and had a big impact in my life as far as moving forward with my art career. In May 2010, I had my own solo art show which was the proudest moment of my life.

Why did you start your Etsy shop?

When I moved back home to America in 2008, I wanted to get my artwork out there for the world. So I created an website, KhaliNouveau.com than an Etsy shop months later. I wanted to take what I learned from the art gallery and present my work online as an art gallery.

How did you come up with your Etsy shop name?
Well, Khali is a nickname given from my family and Nouveau means ‘New” in French. Also, I am fascinated in Art Nouveau design. Together KhaliNouveau was formed as a concept of New Works by Me.

What is your favorite item in your shop and why?
I enjoy painting thus all of my painted artwork is my favorite. I like to imagine a scene, a story, and paint it. And I love color!

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?
Acrylic paint, and graphite pencils seems to suit me just fine and forgiving. I tried oils but it was too messy, smells, and takes to long to dry. I am horrible with pastels, watercolor, and charcoal.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?
I would love to work more with paper. I love how you can manipulate it, bend it, shape it , sculpted it into anything and everything. I have seen some amazing artworks with paper that just leaves me amazed.

Why should people buy handmade?
Buying handmade supports independent artists

Any advice on selling things handmade?
Great work comes from a devoted artist. Create something that you love to make.

Do you have plans for expansion?
For 2011, my goal is to make new artwork to display it in local art galleries.
