Meet Etsy Owner Sarah from Homespun Gossamer and giveaway! – CLOSED

Where are you from and tell us a little about yourself?
I’m a 27 year old married gal from British Columbia, Canada. I was born & raised in the lower mainland but have moved all over the province. I have a 3 year old pug named Homer who keeps me pretty busy as well as a chef husband who keeps me well fed. Absolutely in love with antique & victorian themes, which is really where a lot of my inspiration comes from.

Why did you start your Etsy shop?
I started making jewelry as a hobby to keep me busy & I ended up with so many pieces that my friends & family started to buy them from me as well as commission pieces. So I thought I must be doing something right. I also have a hard time finding the type of jewelry I enjoy wearing commercially & I felt like other people had to be in the same boat. I had heard of Etsy, did some research & decided it would be a good avenue to pursue.

How did you come up with your Etsy shop name?
Well it was fairly easy, I always knew I wanted “Homespun” in the shop name but I knew it needed something else. I began typing in words I liked such as beautiful,pretty etc. into the thesaurus just like that I stumbled upon Gossamer & fell in love. To me it means homespun pretty things that people enjoy.

What is your favorite item in your shop and why?
My favorite item would have to be my Ivory Bloom Ring, it’s simple, romantic & old fashioned, it’s classic pretty and I love that about it, no huge bling or overly fancy design, just simple & clean.

Do any of your pieces have a memorable story behind them?
The first piece I ever made was for a friend of mine expecting her first child, it was a necklace that said “Breathe”, she wore it & people were always telling her how much they loved it & asking where she got it. That led to requests to make items for her mom & some others, I felt so good that someone thought so highly of my work & wanted to wear it that I knew this was going to be a great thing for me.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?
If I have any message it’s feeling good and happy with ones self, it’s great to be different, embrace it!

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?
Well I knew I couldn’t just dive into Metalwork or Molds so I began creating pieces with charms, pendants, beads etc. and fell in love with creating things this way.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?
You know all those wall decals that have become so popular? well I love them, they are all over my house! I would really love to create those, I have such a hard time finding ones that I like, that aren’t juvenile or silly.

Why should people buy handmade?
People should buy handmade because you simply get a far better quality product that mass produced, your more likely to get a unique item & something truly special.

Any advice on selling things handmade?
Be patient, learn to take criticism and have a whole lot of fun doing it.

Do you have plans for expansion?
Right now I am trying my hand at creating my own pendants out of Resin & Polymer Clay.
