Meet Etsy Owner’s Clive and Joseph from Treesandtrunks – CLOSED

Where are you from and tell us a little about yourself?
We are from the Sunny Island Of Singapore! We are actually two boys next door named Clive and Joseph with day jobs as full time musicians!

Why did you start your Etsy shop?
Etsy is a means of us going global! Singapore is a small country (better known as the little red dot on the map) and this limits the boundaries we have to expand and reach out to masses without people turning every corner going. “This is interesting, but I think I just saw this over there… and there…oh there too …” You get the drift.

How did you come up with your Etsy shop name?
Treesandtrunks – It is easy to interpret trunks in our name as tree trunks but we were actually thinking of it as boxes where one stores secret stashes and all things precious. We love our things organic so we thought the best representation of life is in nature itself!

In time, we hope to evolve our name to tree.sand.trunks. tree to represent land, sand to represent the sea and trunks (think shorts) to represent clothes as we take our hands on everything and anything!
Our name is a simple word play but it hinges on our flexibility and infinite possibilities without losing our original sense of identity.

What is your favorite item in your shop and why?
We love all our items! But if we really had to choose, it would have to be our tree inspired series of accessories holder. Contrary to the accessories holders available in the market, we managed to retain the characteristics of real twigs and texture to give It a level of realnesss instead of just cold hard metal. This is further complimented by shades of white, black or silver for that extra modern touch. Best of all, like how no two trees are ever the same, our accessories holders are individually unique pieces.

Do any of your pieces have a memorable story behind them?
It is back to our trees! We must say that it was accidental what got us started creating those pieces. We were initially doing our line of jewelry at local flea markets and were cracking our brains over unconventional ready to buy display stands for our jewelry. Flustered over not finding the perfect display, we decided to make some of our own. After some research and development, we came up with our trees and it proved to be a hit among customers. Even more so than our jewelry!
Like they say, the rest is history.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?
Form meets function! We strive to make aesthetically pleasing products that are practical and beautiful.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?
It was by a lot of trial and error. It does help with easy internet access these days, answers on anything such as materials, construction etc are just a click away. The answers are out there, you just need to knock on the right door!

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?
Clive – That would be drawing and painting! I think drawing and painting are great outlets for energy and expression. I would definitely love to be drawing or painting when not getting all dirty and messy with our current production.
Joseph – Fabric! I like the fluidity fabrics have to offer and it always amazes me how a single sheet of fabric can be conjured to make someone into a walking piece of art. That to me is creativity!

Why should people buy handmade?

Because even the smallest item must have been made with much thought and heart! Furthermore, all handmade items are unique in its own right and buying handmade products are a form of flattery and appreciation of the other person’s efforts and talent.

Any advice on selling things handmade?
Stay true to your own aesthetics. We believe that there will always be people who will appreciate one’s talent and the things one do. Stay positive even if sales are down. Persevere, persevere and persevere!

Apart from creating beautiful pieces, what else do you do?
Music! We do music as our day job! We are actually very lucky to be doing things we have interest (that many do as a hobby) in and get paid doing it!


Do you have plans for expansion?
We currently house our products at some local lifestyle shops but we are always on the lookout to expand our products overseas and certainly hope that we can break new grounds! Afterall good things are meant to be shared! Eventually we hope to have our own retail shop!
