My Dad My Hero by Ethan Long is an amazing children’s book. In it, a young boy explains all of the reasons why his dad is not a super hero. He can’t lift trains over his head (not even the toy ones), he can’t jump tall buildings (or even building blocks), and he can’t turn himself invisible. But his dad still spends lots of time with him, and that makes him the ultimate super hero.
I received the book to review last month, and we wrapped it up immediately so that the kids could give it to their daddy for Father’s Day. Unfortunately, George was called out to a national fire incident shortly before Father’s Day, so we had to wait a little while before we could give it to him. Now that we’ve finally had a chance to open it up and read it, I have to say that I am in love with My Dad My Hero. It’s very well written for a children’s book, it’s short enough that even my two year old has the attention span to enjoy it, and it’s so funny that I enjoy reading it every time I’m asked to. My son thinks it’s the greatest book in the world, and I think my husband and I both have it memorized word-for-word. I also love how it’s illustrated. It’s drawn in a cute, almost-comic-book style, with lots of bright colors and engaging pictures. Even children who can’t read quite yet can figure out the gist of the story and “read” it to their daddies (or any other father-figures in their lives).
