Where are you from and tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Liz; I am from and still reside in Milwaukee, WI. I spent my childhood modeling, figure skating, and dancing; and as a teenager, I started making and designing clothing for myself. I have a BFA in dance, am married to an actor, with whom I have two talented children.
Why did you start your Etsy shop?
I started Ragademalion to put purpose to my constant creations, challenge myself, and fulfill a desire to design.
How did you come up with your Etsy shop name?
Ragademalion is an amalgamation of my favorite words, both of which express my favorite style: tatterdemalion and ragamuffin
What is your favorite item in your shop and why?
The ‘Artwear’ in my shop is by far my favorite. They are the most time consuming pieces, and require the most design work. I become very attached to these creations.
Do any of your pieces have a memorable story behind them?
One of my most memorable was a yarn I created inspired by a huge storm, flood, and tornado that had taken over southeastern Wisconsin. I came across a picture of the tornado, and attempted to construct that image in a gradient yarn. I collaged the image of my yarn on the spindle with that of the tornado, and won a prize for the picture without even entering it in any contests. It was very encouraging!
What was your first piece you sold?
My first Etsy sale was a hand knit, gradient scarf.
Where do you get your inspiration for your pieces?
Everywhere. In particular, images, artwork, and music are most influential in my work. Also, artwork from my children may make a cameo in a knit or felted garment; my children are always inspiring me!
Any advice on selling things handmade?
Value the product and the time spent working. Be ready for anything. Spread the word; word of mouth is the best free advertisement!
Do you have plans for expansion?
I am in the process of expanding and launching another Etsy store where I can put my artwork, handspun yarn, and other successful artistic experiments.
Apart from creating beautiful pieces, what else do you do?
I am a modern dancer with Wild Space Dance Company, a figure skating teacher, and a handwork assistant at a Waldorf grade school.
Any other sites you can be found on?
I’m not too involved with social media, but I am active on Flickr, and often post sneak peeks of current projects and glimpses into my process:
