10, 9 , 8 , 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 BLAST OFF! These words are so popular among little boys and mine is not different. Rocket ships are a large part of my three year old’s vocabulary. Well his looks more like 10 , 9, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Close enough in my world for now and Rocket Town by Bob Logan has really sparked a lot of Blast Offs in our house lately.
Rocket Town is a dream book for any little boy that is learning about large, small, slow, fast, etc. The pictures are unique and many not what I would have pictured a rocket to ever look like, however, it’s teaching Coulter to have an open mind and a vivid imagination. I liked the mixture of black & white pictures along with the color pages. As you venture through the book there is one consistency that follows through on every page and it so happens to be a beagle dog in a yellow pick-up. Cory and I have had a beagle since we got married and so they are no stranger to our children. The beagle in Rocket Town just so happens to be a pretty good mirror image of our J.D. who disappeared last summer.
The surprise came at the end for me actually and while many may have seen it coming, I did not see the last rocket ship coming. The dog has his own rocket and I was able to get a chuckle out of it. A bonus learning moment is when the rocket counts down. As you can see above my son needs a little bit of help with this and I hope that a few (thousand I’m sure) more nights of Rocket Town will help the missed numbers.
Author and Illustrator Bob Logan was a story artist on animations such as Open Season, Madagascar, and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. Your next chance to see a piece of his work will be in Puss in Boots.
