Living in the country I try my absolute hardest not to run out of things, but hey it happens. I can’t always be looking ahead and realize I need some spur of the moment dessert. One of the things I only buy once a year happens to be sweetened condensed milk because it is $4 a can the rest of the year. That cost adds up.
A couple of weeks ago I was just in that position. I needed a dessert and I am totally in love with the individual cheesecakes I have been making. They only need 6 ingredients and are so quick to make. But I happened to be out of sweetened condensed milk and it is pretty essential in making these delectable little no bake cheesecakes.
There was no way I was driving 30 miles to pick up a can of this nor did I have the time. It was either make my own sweetened condensed milk or take the usual cake with icing. I remembered my mom one time telling me it was just milk and a ton of powdered sugar. She happened to be wrong from everything I found on the internet but it gave me a good starting point.
The Cast Of Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk
3/4 cup boiling water
6 tablespoons butter
1 cup sugar
2 2/3 cups nonfat dry milk powder
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Directions Of Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk
1. Combine boiling water and butter in a small saucepan and stir until butter melts.
2. Combine melted butter mixture, sugar, vanilla and nonfat dry milk powder in blender until mixture thickens. This will take about 2 minutes.
3. Store un-used sweetened condensed milk in the refrigerator.
Makes 20 ounces. A normal can of sweetened condensed milk is 14 ounces.

10 years agoWould I add the vanilla with other ingredients just before blending? I’m thinking that’s what I shoul do, but want to make sure. Thanks!

I have updated the recipe to show that you would add it when you add all the ingredients to the blender. Thank you for pointing that out!

Thank you for featuring my Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk. I love how easy it is to change the flavor up a little and that I don’t have to run to the store to pick some up when I run out.

I like knowing I have a backup for when I run out of the convenient option. Making your own is simple and it would get rid of the cans taking up space on your shelves.

I couldn’t believe how easy it really was to make my own sweetened condensed milk. I will be using this recipe often in my own house. I am shocked to realize how much I actually do use sweetened condensed milk.
What types of recipes do you use it in?
