My opinions are my own, I was compensated for this post with a free copy of Miss Brenda and the Loveladies. The story and the reality of my feelings are true.
I recently was able to review a book called Miss Brenda and The Loveladies. I didn’t know what to expect when I started reading this book, but I wasn’t expecting to have my heart ripped out of my chest—in a good way. I have to admit that it’s been at least five years before a book kept my attention long enough to read from beginning to end. The Loveladies and I have a lot in common, a lot more in common than you would ever realize.
You see, I came from a very broken home, just like many of the Loveladies. Thankfully, I never had to endure any time in prison because of wrongful choices I made, but my childhood matches a lot of their stories growing up. In essence, we’re all a product of our childhood, until we allow God to do something about it.
Just like some of the main characters in the book, I too, was sexually abused. These women are abused my people they know, close family members. Do you know how hard it is to read about someone else going through the same abuse you’ve been through? Your stomach ends up in your throat and your heart just aches for them.
I’m not here to make my story outshine the women in the story. I’m here to say that if I had not of allowed God into my life, when I did, I could be living the same terrible stories these women have lived through. I’ve never been to prison, but my two brothers, my dad, and my step-dad have all been to jail.
If you’re looking for a story to remind you of how God HAS been there for you, then Miss Brenda and The Loveladies is for you. Whether you come from the perfect life, or from a broken life, no one is too far gone to know who Jesus is.
This book has encouraged me to love others more deeply and to be thankful for where God has brought me. He gives us free-will and we have the freedom to choose to allow His grace into our lives. Miss Brenda showed me that I’m not too old to allow God into my life. If your life isn’t moving and you’re not being challenged in some way, then something is wrong.
God never promised us an easy life, but as long as we’re putting Him first and have Faith—He will lead us through all of the trials and tribulations headed our way.
