Not that long ago, my daughter asked me THE question…. you know, the one that many parents dread more than any other. No, I don’t mean “Mom can I borrow your credit card?”, although I also dread that one! June asked me, “Mom, where do babies come from?” Dum dum dum…. cue the ominous music here. Of course, I had to tell her something, but she’s only two and way too little for even a toned down version of the “sex talk”. After asking her a few questions of my own, I realized that what she was really interested in knowing is where did she come from (2 year olds are so egocentric aren’t they! (-: ) Luckily, I had just the story to read to her to answer that question: God Gave Us You by Lisa T. Bergren.
This children’s board book, which is beautifully illustrated by Laura J. Bryant, provides a positive and wholesome message about where babies come from. When a little baby polar bear cub asks her mommy where she came from, her mommy explains how mommy and daddy wanted her so badly and God gave her to them. There is no conversation about how the baby polar bear is actually made, but the book does explain that the baby starts in mommy’s tummy, and then mommy and daddy have to wait until the day comes to go to the hospital and let the baby come out into the world. And throughout the whole story, the common theme can be summed up as “Mommy and Daddy couldn’t wait to see you, God gave us you.”
Both my son and daughter enjoyed reading God Gave us You, and even the baby loved to look at the pictures. The book has a terrific message that I was proud to teach my children. I will say that, for a board book, some of the pages were a bit wordy. My two year old didn’t have quite a long enough attention span to make it through the whole story, and it was kind of touch to convince my older son to read it (since it was a board book, he assumed it was “for babies”.) That little problem was easily overcome though. I abbreviate some of the pages for my little ones, and, once Johnny actually heard the story he decided he liked it after all! This is a fantastic book for children of any age really. To learn more about the author or to purchase the book click here.
