POOF! Just like magic. That is how this encouraging charater Kathryn solves everyday life challenges. Guided by her best friend Maggie the butterfly, Kathryn conquers her fears, makes choices and friends. Although Kathryn has a magical best friend and wand she comes to find that the magic comes from within herself, (even for banishing the monster under the bed). As the reader journeys with Kathryn as she gains self confidence and courage, the colorful illustrations by Christine Winscott will keep young readers engaged, with ‘extras’ waiting to be discovered.
I reviewed Kathyrn the Grape – Just like Magic with my three boys (3, 6 and 11) during our story nights. Although my oldest said this book was ‘girlie’ he asked to have it as his choice book the following night. My other two boys also enjoyed the story as well as the pictures! I look for books that encourage self confidence, courage and good morals and this story is right on the money! My boys and I have found ourselves saying “just like magic” when something happens or telling a story of their day at school or hockey. My 11 year old may not admit it, but I think he enjoyed this book and the moral that came with it. Kudos to Cloward and her team for a well done, well meaning book! Cloward has planed the release of the second book Kathryn the Grape – Magical Charm Bracelet in the spring of 2011 since my boys and I enjoy series books we will be keeping our eyes open.
