Through the years my mom taught my brother how to cook and fend for himself. Not knowing his way around a kitchen wasn’t an option. He was responsible for cooking one meal a month the same as I was from start to finish including meal planning. He can grill a mean steak, whip up some wonderful potatoes and make the best chocolate cake from scratch you’ve ever had! A chocolate cake recipe that won grand champion at the county fair every year.
Now, I said my brother knew his way around the kitchen and can read a recipe as good as anyone. He didn’t really care to expand his knowledge in the dessert department beyond the most amazing made from scratch chocolate cake, the One Bowl Chocolate Cake. Why did he not care to expand his dessert cooking beyond the One Bowl Chocolate Cake? That’s because it’s that amazing! It really is the best moist cake recipe I have ever had!
This One Bowl Easy Chocolate Cake Recipe is super moist. Almost fall apart moist and just the right amount of chocolatey goodness without being super sweet. It really is the best cake I think I have ever tasted as far as chocolate cakes go. Nothing fancy I assure you is needed but when your guests or family taste this cake they will think some fancy ingredients went into making this cake.
Kris won the grand champion ribbon every year at the county fair because he got to bake the recipe that doesn’t falter or let you down. It comes out perfect every time. As a baker and a cake decorator, I am always on the lookout for something that will win clients over and this recipe is it. It wins every time!
This One Bowl Chocolate Cake Recipe is a perfect dessert for the family, works wonderful in truffle recipes, looks delicious at backyard BBQ’s and can be dressed up or down depending on your needs. Above I have paired it with a delicious and creamy cream cheese icing but from experience looks and tastes delicious with a simple chocolate drizzle.
Chocolate One Bowl Cake Recipe
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 cup shortening
- ½ cup cocoa powder
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 ½ cups flour
- 2 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup sour milk (I don't mean rotten milk, I mean you need to add 1 tablespoon of vinegar to 1 cup of milk and let sit for a couple of minutes)
- 1 cup boiling water
- Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour (for chocolate I use cocoa powder rather than flour) your baking pan well. I generally use a 10 inch round pan but an 8x10 pyrex pan works perfect.
- In mixing bowl combine sugar, shortening, cocoa powder, eggs and vanilla and mix well. Add flour, salt and baking soda gradually and mix. Alternate adding the boiling water and soured milk until well mixed. Your batter can be a bit runny at this point but DON'T add more flour. I assure you it will turn out delicious!
- Bake in a pre-heated oven for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

11 years agoI’m assuming that the baking soda and salt are mixed in with the flour?

11 years ago AUTHORCorrect! Thank you for pointing that out and I have updated the post to show the addition of these ingredients. Unlike most recipes they don’t need to be combined with the flour before hand just add them to the mix individually.

10 years agoI love one bowl recipes, too. Especially since our dishwasher is finicky and I have to wash most dishes by hand.

11 years agoI have a chocolate cake recipe that my mum used to make, it’s not one pot though. I am intrigued by the sour milk ingredient. Maybe I will have to have a go at your cake 🙂 Thanks for linking it at #openslather
