How to Avoid Procrastination and Get Things Done

One of the most common problems people have is procrastination. Especially those folks that work from home. Having to perform a certain task can itself be a hard thing to do, not to mention how much more difficult it becomes with all the distractions that surround you. At home, there are tons of things that could put you off doing what you ought to be doing – watching TV, browsing the internet, etc. When one procrastinates, important tasks are left to be done at the last moment and are usually done not in the best way possible exactly because of lack of time. Procrastinators feel they are in this vicious circle there is no escape from. However, if one wants to put his/her will to the test, s/he will realize that there is nothing impossible. Here are some ideas on how to avoid procrastination and get things done.

1. Break the task into little steps

Part of the problem why people can’t get things done is because the tasks seem too gargantuan for them. How to deal with that? Easy. Simply break down the assignment in small steps. As a reward, you can grant yourself with a couple of minutes of free time after each ‘segment’ is completed. You will see that conquering the summit one step at a time is easier.

2. Change the environment

If you happen to find plenty of distractions at home, try moving your work somewhere else. For example, go sit on your porch or in your backyard, the park, etc. The local library is a place where you will find not only peace and lack of distraction but even probably inspiration in the form of new ideas.

3. Create a timeline and set specific deadlines

This has a lot to do with #1. Besides breaking the overall task into little pieces, set a deadline for each piece. This way you will know that you must finish at a certain time. Needless to say, if you fail to adhere to the deadline, you will be deprived of your reward in the form of free time.

4. Eliminate all distractions

If you happen to procrastinate a bit too much, try to get rid of what is putting you off work. Unplug the TV and the PC. However, if your work needs to be performed on a computer, disable your internet connection, or at least block the websites that distract you the most – social media, online videos, blogs. Or even go to the extreme – have your spouse set a password for them, a password that is to remain a secret to you until you get the job done.

5. Meet with people

There a times during your creating process when you will need to go out to ‘recharge’. Use that time wisely. Meet up with people who you think will be able to inspire you in one way or another. Be it a colleague or just a friend whose professional field is nothing like yours. After all, you never know where inspiration could come from.

6. Get a companion

Having someone at your side makes everything better. Regardless if it is a partner to share tasks with or even a friend to compete against. The person just needs to be someone with whom you can exchange experience and ideas.

7. Stop thinking of various excuses

After all, one can think of a ton things that are stopping him/her from doing something, but bottom line is that the only obstacle in the way towards success is you and you alone. The reason for not achieving the desired outcome is not being determined enough.
It all comes down to actually doing things. Get a grip, stop complaining and slacking, and start acting.
