Around Christmas time, it always seems there are a ton of people on our list that we need to get small gifts for. Sometimes, these can be the hardest gifts because you don’t want to be lame, but you also don’t want to go overboard. A lot of times, I end up settling for filling mugs with candy or something along those lines.
This year, I wanted to come up with something that was homemade, useful, and a little more thoughtful. All of this while still keeping it simple in order to make it affordable and appropriate. That’s when I came up with the idea to make this Easy Homemade Hand Warmer. You can make them any design or shape you choose and they work great for many various types of gifts. I even plan on making some to donate for those in need this winter season.
How Do You Make An Easy Homemade Hand Warmer?
Choose the basic shape you would like to make your hand warmer in and cut two pieces of fabric out to match the shape.
Line the fabric up, with the side of the fabric you want to be on the outside when finished, facing each other. Sew around the edge of the fabric, leaving about ¼ of an inch around the edge.
Stop sewing when you have about 1-1.5 inches left to sew. Turn the fabric right side out and fill it with the rice by using a funnel.
Position the edge of the fabric to resemble the already sewn portion of the hand warmer and pin it in place. Using the needle and thread, finish sewing the hand warmer closed.
Print the hand warmer printable on white card stock. Cut out the cards and place one along with a hand warmer in a plastic baggie. Repeat for all your hand warmers.
Tips for Making an Easy Homemade Hand Warmer
- If you don’t want to use baggies to distribute your hand warmers, you can either use small safety pins or ribbons to attach them to the hand warmer. If you’re making a lot, a baggie or similar holder protects the hand warmer and printable the best.
- Remember these hand warmers are for hands, so they don’t need to be large like a neck warmer usually is. The handiest size is one that people can easily fit into their pockets.
- You can print the image using normal paper, however, the cards won’t be as durable as cardstock and turn out the best on the thicker paper.
- Normal material works the best for these since they’re heated in the microwave. However, you can experiment using felt or fleece if you prefer, I’m just not sure how it will turn out since I haven’t tested these fabrics yet.
Common Questions About Easy Homemade Hand Warmer
How Long Do Rice Hand Warmers Stay Warm?
These hand warmers should be placed in a microwave for about 30-45 seconds and should stay warm for around 20 minutes. This is specifically for rice. If you prefer that it stays warmer longer, dried corn will stay warm for around 40 minutes. However, rice is less bulk and fits in the hand more comfortably and smoothly compared to corn. Remember, the larger the size, the more you may need to leave the warmer in the microwave. It’s always best to start at 30 seconds and work your way up until you find the perfect amount of time. Each microwave is different and will have its own magic number for heating the warmers.
