How We Celebrate Valentine’s Day With Kids

Thank you on behalf of Coupons. com for sponsoring this post.

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and I don’t know about your household, but we are going to be celebrating this day with our kids like we have since the beginning of our parenthood. It’s not that this holiday doesn’t mean much to us as a couple, it’s just not in us to have to fight for a sitter, dinner reservations, and pay for an expensive dinner.

How We Celebrate Valentine's Day With Kids

When it comes to celebrating this day with our kids,  I don’t want them to think it’s just about getting Valentine’s Day cards and candy from their classmates.  I want to make it special with a few crafts and a fancy dinner for the 4 of us.  As the kids get older and gain sweethearts of their own, I want them to spoil their sweethearts. Why? Well, everyone enjoys having a little love sent their way on V-day!

The boys are a bit young for the mushy stuff, but Valentine’s Day doesn’t just have to be about “all that.” Valentine’s Day is a powerful day to show others that you care and they are never far from your thoughts.  Since the boys are not in school this Valentine’s Day, I plan on going all out.

How We Will Be Celebrating Valentines Day With Kids

We will start our day off with a fun breakfast to show the kids my heart is for them.  We tend to have pancakes often on the weekends and I will be trying out a new recipe for Red Velvet Heart Pancakes with Cream Cheese Syrup (yea I should call it icing but that doesn’t go on pancakes).  I’ll be serving this with a side of protein to keep us going for the day.

Kindness Wreath

I love the idea behind the Kindness Wreath from the Valentine’s Day Magazine on The Good Stuff by Coupons. com found on page 26 -27.  I’ve already snagged the supplies needed to enjoy making this wreath with the boys.  Another twist on this wreath, is that you could have everyone list the things that they are thankful for this year.

Homemade gifts are some of my favorite gifts to receive and I know I’m not alone.  Hopefully, we have timed it right and Grandma and Grandpa will receive their hug in an envelope on Saturday.  Gifts in a jar are always nice to receive as well and the kids enjoy putting them together.  They may not always look pretty by the time the boys have “helped” but they are functional!

I have also purchased a few supplies to make some shelter kits.  I always snag the shampoo and soap when we stay in motels as they work perfect for these kits.  Along with a few dollar store toothbrushes, pair of fuzzy socks, dollar store razors, words of encouragement, and a small snack.  We often donate these to the shelter for the abused.  It’s kind of a one night kit before they are on a bus for a life changing moment.  You can check with your local shelter about the items they like to see in these kits.

We will be ending the day with a special dinner, strawberry shortcake, and a movie all huddled together as a family. Valentine’s Day is no longer just about my husband and I getting closer together (we make time for that other times of the year), but also teaching our children about this day and sharing the love with them.  It doesn’t hurt to toss in a couple of roses and chocolates, but we do our best not to let this be the focus of the day (or the expense).    Strawberry Shortcake
